Hi,
I tried the same thing some time ago, and with quite a lot of hand
holding got it working. FWIW I installed the following GNU packages over
Solaris 2.7:
autoconf-2.13
bash-2.02
binutils-2.8.1 (not ld)
bison-1.28
fileutils-4.0
findutils-4.1
flex-2.5.4a
gcc-2.8.1
gzip-1.2.4a
libstdc++-2.8.1.1
m4-1.4
make-3.77
perl-5.005_03
tar-1.13
tcsh-6.08.00
texinfo-3.12
In direct response to your question, the GNU "as" is the default on my
machine. I don't remember whether that's becuase I had to or not.
Using happy 1.6, HC bootstraps and GHC4.04 source I got the compiler
working, but not the documentation build or the binary distribution :(
I could make a tarred copy of my build available on ftp if that'll
help. (It's enough of a hack that I'm not convinced it will!)
