OK I see, I was switching from a ghc-6.6.20070420 binary release to
the Debian package. I must have installed the 'extralibs' package or
something together with the former...?

Just to be clear, ghc-6.6.20070420 isn't a "release", it's a "snapshot". You probably installed the binary distribution produced by our overnight build, which does include the extralibs.

The Debian package splits out the extralibs into separate packages, so you can install and upgrade them separately.

Hello,
Perhaps it's a bit late, but should the release notes for 6.6.1
mention that many libraries have been split off from the main package
(at least in the Debian version)?
I am looking here:
/usr/share/doc/ghc6/changelog.Debian.gz
and here:
http://haskell.org/ghc/docs/6.6.1/html/users_guide/release-6-6-1.html
and I don't see anything.
That change happened in version 6.6, you'll see it in the 6.6 release notes. Incedentally, I think the 6.6.1 manual should have contained the 6.6 release notes too, perhaps that was an oversight.
