#1698: binary distribution not installable (problems with base package)

The binary build for i386-unknown-linux doesn’t work, at least not if
the installation destination isn’t /usr/local. I get the following
messages at the end of the installing process:

Also note that the directory structure of the installed software seems to
be strange. The base-2.1 directory is in
{{{$PREFIX/lib/ghc-6.8.20070913/ghc-6.8.20070913/lib}}}.
