Comment (by duncan):
The GLUT package is shared with ghc-6.8. It was fixed to work with ghc-6.8
and 6.6 and 6.4. Unfortunately ghc-HEAD has not caught up yet with ghc-6.8
and still has old version numbers for it's base and other core packages.
This means that the GLUT package (and several others) get mis-configured
because they're expecting base-3.x not base-2.x. They do of course work
with base-2.x but they expect base-2.x to be the monolithic base and only
expect base-3.x to be the new slimmed down version. so confronted with a
slimmed down base that is marked as version 2.x it all goes wrong. Because
the GLUT package is shared with ghc-6.8 and ghc-HEAD we cannot really fix
it to work with both (without insane hacks), the solution is for ghc-HEAD
to catch up and use the right version numbers for its base package.
