 Thinking again about this, I agree that my former idea where the bug may
 have hibernated is too short-sighted. Though, the utils may have been the
 place.

 The only other place is the rts, where I used the stage2 generated files
 with only the ostensibly bad StgStdThunks.o and StgMisc...o replaced by
 those compiled with the stage1 cross compiler from i386.

 I don't know whether this is really worth to tracked down further. This
 type of failure should only happen in the special case of systems which
 allow to use both 64bit and 32bit applications and the 32bit system is
 used to bootstrap the 64bit compiler.
