I should further add that I cannot reproduce this on a PowerPC chip. I
don't know whether the issue is multicore related, x86 related, or x86_64
related, as all three are different between the two. Thinking about it
this morning, I suspect that the 64 bit issue seems most likely the cause,
and I wonder how much of a workout the low-level concurrency stuff has had
on 64 bit systems in general, but I'm not really sure.
