Comment:

 Yes, I also noticed that gcc now uses the correct single quote characters,
 because the font I'm using in my xterm doesn't have those glyphs so they
 appear as boxes :-)

 It is the right thing to do, but it needs to wait until at least we have
 locale encoding/decoding support in Handle I/O.
