#2949: ghci suddenly won't start

I've no clue what is wrong or what I have changed, but when I tried to
fire up GHCI today, I got the below message. I've tried removing .ghci
and .ghc to no avail. The compiler is the default shipped by Ubuntu.
% ghci
GHCi, version 6.8.2: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ :? for help
ghc-6.8.2: internal error: evacuate(static): strange closure type 0
(GHC version 6.8.2 for i386_unknown_linux)
