Comment:

 The discussion period is now over. According to the feedback from Neil, I
 attached a new patch where '!StringRep' disappears completely instead of
 being deprecated. The function 'mkStringRep', however, is kept as
 deprecated (and now uses the new '!CharRep').

 The file base-sybChar.new.patch replaces the old base-sybChar.patch. This
 new patch seems to include my fix for #2759. I don't know if this is a
 problem.
