It looks like the original bug report is the same as #2619.
I don't know about the second part (the fact that I couldn't build 6.10.1
with 6.8.3. It's possibly due to additional libraries that I installed,
above and beyond the base 6.8.3 distribution. I have now succeeded in
building 6.10.1 (via building 6.6.1 !), and I don't have time to
investigate this second part.
