 I don't know what a good reference would be for this sort of writing (as
 "normal" style guides tell you to do things like moving punctuation inside
 double quotes, which is bad for clarity when dealing with something rigid
 like programming). The Chicago Manual of Style has a couple of related
 things:

 7.14 (on pluralising noun coinages) "To avoid an awkard appearance, an
 adjustment in spelling (or sometimes an apostrophe) may be needed", giving
 "maybe's" as an example.

 7.16 "To avoid confusion, lower case letters and abbreviations with two or
 more interior periods or with both capital and lowercase letters form the
 plural with an apostrophe and an s", giving "M.A.'s and Ph.D's (or MAs and
 PhD's)" as examples.
