Supported by Edward Kmett, Henning Thielemann, Yitzchak Gale, Bas van Dijk
and (I think) Ashley Yakeley. Iavor Diatchki preferred omitting
instances, but most of us agree that when a sensible instance exists it
should be declared to avoid orphans in client packages.
