 Quite right.  This is to do with the GHCi interface, and doesn't require
 lots of insight into GHC's internals, so if anyone feels up to looking at
 it, that'd be great.  There's quite a bit of guidance in the form of the
 existing stuff about typeclass instances.

 Failing that, I'll get to it sometime after the new inference machinery is
 working.
