Just a note to say that I have exactly the same problem in my parallelism
monad ([https://github.com/simonmar/monad-par]). I believe I've tried a
recent HEAD and couldn't get a loop to optimise correctly, just like
tibbe's first example. I'll follow up with some concrete details and code
shortly.
