 I may have unraveled part of that. Unless I'm missing something, it seems
 the testsuite is reporting invalid passes. Running `make TEST=4038`, 6
 tests pass and 1 fails. When I run the passing tests manually (just as
 they appear in the output of `make TEST=4038`) from the command line,
 every one of them segfaults.
