The opticians’ professional body announced Wednesday that it has fired a volley of 31 new complaints against 22 individuals it claims have been performing professional eye work for which they aren’t legally qualified. The 22 are working at seven outlets of Greiche & Scaff, six of Lunetterie Sears and three of Optique Laurier. The thorny and complex turf war pitches one professional order against another. Both optometrists and opticians in Quebec are permitted to fit and adjust corrective lenses. Both professional orders have about 1,300 members each. But only optometrists – who undergo considerably more training than opticians – are legally permitted to perform eye examinations on patients, and then issue the necessary prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses. The opticians contend that assistants to some optometrists have been illegally measuring the distance between patients’ pupils, adjusting the fit of eyeglass frames, or otherwise performing tasks from which they are barred under the professional laws that govern the two professions. The latest claims, none of which have been proven in Quebec Court, seek $45,000 in fines. The opticians fired their initial volley of 16 such complaints in January 2008, against nine non-optometrists. No verdicts are yet in for those complaints.
