I agree that your Costco-measured PD sounds low, and 60 mm sounds more likely, especially if you're a man. But try measuring your PD again yourself, and try it once from the edge of one pupil to the same edge of the other one.
You can test your need to take the glasses off by closing one eye and positioning various spots near the middle of the other lens over your open eye and see if that makes a difference. My guess is that it won't, and that you're starting to become "farsighted though nearsighted." Even though your PD is probably off, you're still putting your eyes behind the correct prescription, though that does raise a second question - could they have made your prescription too strong? That's also a possible explanation for your need to remove your glasses for close viewing. I tend to favor not wearing glasses when reading and doing other things close up, as long as it's comfortable. There's even a school of thought that says that using reading glasses (plus lenses) for close work can help prevent or reduce nearsightedness, the idea being that the eyes adapt to nearsighted glasses and you become more nearsighted from that, especially when you're still growing. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Check us out at the oft-updated http://glassyeyes.blogspot.com!
