I'm prescribed bi-focals but wear progressives.  I find that little sliver
in between actually helps when I'm looking at a computer screen over
someone's shoulder or even at my desk top.  Otherwise, I never notice the
difference and I watch tv, live sports and read with no problems.
I suggest you try progressives.  They are essentially no-line bifocals.
*Please make very sure of you have the proper PD though because that
measurement comes into bigger play once you leave single vision glasses and
could seriously effect your viewing experience if it's not right.*
