If you are in the US, then your prescription is yours. The doctor should
give you a copy, by default. If he doesn't, then insist you get a copy
before you leave.

The PD is not a part of the prescription in most states, so you may have to
ask for it.

The doctor doesn't need to know why...unless you want to tell him. But,
definitely get your PD measured professionally...you'll look through a
binocular gizmo and it measures the PD based on the reflections produced by
the surface of your eyes. Neat gadget, really.

Most places don't charge for the PD...you just need to ask for it. If they
do charge, it shouldn't be more than $5 or so. I always offer to pay,
because they did do work for me...but have yet to find someone who would
accept payment.

If you've had glasses before, the PD should also be on your records at the
store where your glasses were made. A friend got hers this way, from
Sears. Have them print out your records...your PD doesn't change, once
you've reached adulthood.

P.S. I actually told one of the doctors exactly what I had in mind...she
only asked one thing as compensation. That I bring in the glasses when I
get them, and let her adjust them. She wanted to see what was available
online, and was extremely helpful. This may or may not work for you, as my
"excuse" was experimenting during a computer class I was teaching at the
time.
