Ok, I've looked into things a bit more, and I think the best thing to
do is to have separate text renderers on Mac OS X and Linux. For Linux
we can use SDL_Pango. For OS X, I think I can use ATSUI (Apple's text
system) to draw into a bitmap, and then blit that to SDL. On Windows,
is it best to use pango or the native windows renderer?

I'm on vacation now so I won't be able to investigate this further for
another week or so.
