Recent scientific studies have evaluated the relative readability of
white on black vs. black on white text and found serious problems with
white on black.

I suspect that it makes a difference, whether you look at paper or a screen.
White background on screen should make you feel dizzy a lot sooner than dark
background.


I suspect white on colored is even worse.

White on colored often is hard to read.  So is black on colored.
But on the other hand:  textured background is more relaxing in the long run,
and more appealing on first sight.

Personally, I use colored text on textured background for all my onscreen work.
