On your first point, there is a new article in University Affairs that seems to imply some bravery and real science on the part of naysayer's, and provides an opportunity for some name-calling (fear mongers).
http://www.universityaffairs.ca/issues/2006/december/contrarians_01.html Yesterday, I was followed down the hall by a faculty member holding this article, which he held as proof that people like me think that only the "high priesthood" of science should be "allowed to believe in free in quiry". What rubbish. The same faculty member told me earlier this year that evolutionary science is a kind of religion, not science, so consider the source... But it is still unfortunate that University Affairs would not be able to distinguish from someone really disputing a hypothesis or model with studies and results, and someone just waving it away. I like the part where they blaming politics for the fact that they don't get any attention for their views.
