Maybe our fate is sealed and we will not be able to stand the test of
time as a species ... in the long run. But that does not relieve us from
the responsibility we have towards our children and other future
generations who will live to see the light of day. Moreover, think of
how communities of people around the world have dealt with major
disaster through the ages. Humanity always proved to be very adaptive
and its economic behaviour not just governed by present day 'greedy
consumerism'. Sure, that behaviour dominates actual pursuits, but that
does not mean we will continue to act like that under any circumstances.
The image of mankind behaving like the mythical frog in water that's
slowly heated to boiling point, is to my personal view, erroneous and
shows ignorance of essential aspects of humanity.

We must act and we will. Question is when and how. One option is to wait
and see and act on effects (feedback), another would be to preview and
act on expectations (feedforward) as to avoid overshoot and minimize the
impact of more-or-less anticipated effects on humanity and the systems
we depend on. We have chosen for the second option and call upon the
scientific community to more actively support the processes required to
act in time and with appropriate measures. To our POV that will require
more active participation in our control systems and we are willing to
enable just that. It will take time and incredible efforts, but there's
a good chance it will be worth it.
