I agree that the role of broadcast meteorologists in the climate change situation is very important.
The culture of the atmospheric sciences is actually rather complex, and the natural connection of broadcast meteorologists to operational meteorologists doesn't necessarily leave them well-informed about climatology. Yet, naturally, they will be barraged with questions about it. Their answers are consequential for all of us. The comments of Abrams and Sobel don't seem all that much in touch with climate science. Also, they don't seem to take their responsibilities seriously. Consider their "just sayin'" thing about the GFDL model in the article "Those Darn Computer Models": === Fortunately, the GFDL turned out to be wrong, [about a particular hurricane] and the earlier consensus of the other models was much more accurate. An interesting side note on all of this is that the GFDL model was developed in the same place as some of the climate models that are used to support major global warming because of increased greenhouse gases. Just an observation....not necessarily an editorial comment!!!!! === They don't look like juveniles in their picture, but what a juvenile comment! Did you know they work in the same place as produces some of the weather predictions that tobacco farmers use to help produce their cancer-causing products? Given the importance of this matter, perhaps the AMS broadcast seal of approval should actually test people's understanding of the IPCC reports? Or, perhaps weather people who don't know much more than the random person about, say, paleoclimate, the carbon cycle, oceanography, glaciology or radiative transfer physics should just say "weather prediction is actually not all that closely related to climate prediction" and leave it at that. Brett Anderson (linked on the same page) seems to be taking his responsibilities more seriously. mt On Nov 21, 7:04 pm, David <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Elliot Abrams > Expert Senior Meteorologist > 8/15/2007 > The Scientific Climatehttp://www.accuweather.com/global-warming/index.asp > > Elliot Abrams is one of two people in the world who has > earned the accredited status of Certified Consulting > Meteorologist along with the American Meteorological > Society (AMS) Seal of Approval for both radio and television. > > $ 64,000 question - > What should we do about whatever climate change is > coming down the pike? > > Happy Thanksgiving, > David Christainsen - meteorologist --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Global Change ("globalchange") newsgroup.
