This discussion group is probably the wrong place for technical advice. We like to discuss the big picture, not the "nuts and bolts".
Which tool you use is very dependent on what you want to achieve. Many people use Ferret for these sorts of tasks, a tool which has a very nice tutorial attached. http://ferret.wrc.noaa.gov/Ferret/ Google is your friend. So is, or should be, your supervisor or advisor. As a last resort you could contact the organization from which you obtained the data. If you cannot figure it out on your own, do not be ashamed to ask questions of your colleagues or supervisor.
