There are about 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, making national governance a
challenge. The oil-rich southeast region tried to assert independence as a
state called Biafra in a civil war that took place during the mid-1960's. I
was living in Nigeria at the time and evacuated on advice of the US State
Dept. I gather from a recent National Geographic magazine feature that
living conditions in the southeast are deplorable despite the production of
vast wealth from oil extraction - very sad.
