Lalu quietly hikes rail freight rates
New Delhi: Ahead of the interim rail budget, the railway ministry has quietly hiked the freight rates of foodgrains, pulses and flour by 8.3%. The hike has been carried out by revising the classification of these goods through a circular issued by the railways. The revised rates will be effective from February 1. "There will be an increase of 8.3% per tonne in freight rates for these goods from February,'' an official said. Currently, the freight rate of a tonne of foodgrains is Rs 694.10 for a distance of 1,000 km, which will be hiked to Rs 751.90. The freight charges of chemical manure have also been revised. Lalu Prasad will present the vote on account on February 13 in the Lok Sabha and is unlikely to tinker with the freight and rail fares.
