CNG to cost Rs 7 more, piped gas may soar by 30%

Somit Sen | TNN

Mumbai: From Tuesday, compressed natural gas (CNG) will cost between Rs 6.50
and Rs 7 more per kilo while piped natural gas (PNG) will spiral by 25 to 30
per cent.
Although this is the biggest hike in Mumbai in the last decade, Mahanagar
Gas sources said the impact on public transport would not be “drastic’’,
working out to an extra 32 paise per 1.6 km for autorickshaws, 69 paise per
1.6 km for taxis and three paise per passenger travelling by BEST bus. While
BEST committee members are not keen on increasing ticket rates, auto and
taxi unions have already demanded a huge hike in the basic tariff: from Rs 9
to Rs 15 for autos and Rs 14 to Rs 16 for cabs.
In a quid pro quo, the state government will reportedly insist on taxis
and rickshaws replacing their meters with electronic ones before discussing
fare revision with union leaders in a meeting likely to be held on June 8.
Incidentally, taxi fares were raised only last August from Rs 13 to Rs 14.
