Is MariaDB supported by GLPI without any issues?
For test you can install MySQL and configure GLPI to use it.
Also - is PMA connects to DB same way as GLPI? I mean unix sockets, tcp
sockets.
If you not sure about that - just connect to MariaDB with same settings
as in GLPI - host, port, user, password ans so.
