After wrestling with my front crank seal, it still leaks. So, when I
bought another seal to install the guys at Fresno airparts gave me a copy
of a Continental service bulletin that addresses installation of the seal
and subsequent leaks.

After removing the seal, the SB tells you to take out the upper spark
plugs and rotate the engine with the starter with the prop off while
using light emery cloth to remove any surface imperfections. Then , it
tells you to use 180 grit emery cloth and make a Helix pattern at a 30
degree angle in the direction of prop rotation. This has to be done by
hand, a little at a time as you rotate the crank shaft around. Once
complete, there is a Helix or "rifled" pattern around the crank behind
the seal. Continental says this is supposed to pull the excess oil back
away from the seal while the engine rotates. Lastly, I didnt push the new
seal in quite as far as the previous one, to keep the seal from riding on
the same spot on the crankshaft.

I'll know tomorrow, once the sealant dries and the rain quits. I'm tired
of getting oil on my windshield. Other than that, all is well. I got a 4-
pack of Nuvite polish for Christmas and I am holding off on the polishing
until I get this oil leak fixed.
