----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Bruce: My cylinder rebuilder tells me that NuChrome is the way to go. However, he does caution about where you purchase the ring sets. I know we do not have much choice on the pistons, but if you do not get good rings, the whole job goes down the drain in short order. One also must consider the damage done using leaded gasoline in our engines designed to run on unleaded. The lead content in 100LL can cause a valve to start causing problems in less than 100 hours. The other comments made concerning the liability of the mechanic/cylinder shop are accurate. Rings/piston clearance are also very important. I am working on a C-85 engine now that at its Major overhaul, 315 hours ago, only one of the four pistons was replaced. Needles to say, with 1400 plus hours since new, the piston ring lands were worn beyond limits. If you want it right, you must measure even the new components. In order to get perfect ring end gap, you can order oversize rings and file them to get exactly the end gap you want. Is your engine now apart? Check the log book entry for the overhaul and see what parts were replaced. IF the entry just says top overhaul, be wary!
