If you have really noxious smelling auto fuel, chances
are it has some oxygenating compounds commonly
used in some states during the winter. MTBE is the one
that really stinks.

It was supposed to help the environment by cutting smog,
but it ended up costing 5-10% in gas mileage and is so detrimental
to ground water that some states outlawed it while the federal
EPA still mandated it, leading to a mini-constitutional
crisis of sorts.

It seems to be mostly gone from New Jersey this year.
At least our fuel doesn't seem to be skunky smelling this
winter, so I think it is gone.

So try again, or try during the summer months. Or
change brands.
