Syd, Vern,

It is definitely good to hear that you are also interested in getting the
Ercoupe included as an aircraft with a Standard certification that could
be flown under Sport Pilot rules. I have been following the Sport Pilot
proposal for a little over a year and actually purchased an Ercoupe
specifically because it was included in the list of Standard certification
aircraft in a February 2001 EAA article that would qualify under the Sport
Pilot rule. Despite the EAA's "waffling" on this point, it would seem that
the Ercoupe should qualify.

Below is a copy of a letter that I sent to the AOPA at their web site
under the new Sport Pilot sub site.

Subject: The early Ercoupe 415 C should be included under the Sport Pilot
rule.

Hello,

I feel very strongly that the early Ercoupe Model 415C should be included
as a Standard certified aircraft that a Sport pilot could fly when the
aircraft was loaded to 1,232 pounds even though the certified Gross Weight
of 1,260 pounds is 28 pounds over the allowable maximum take-off weight
under the Sport Pilot rule.

First, because of the built-in characteristic of the Ercoupe to not spin
and also to not stall in the way that a stall is experienced in a
conventional aircraft. When the Ercoupe was first introduced, it was
possible to get a pilot's license in one after only 20 hours of
instruction.

Secondly, just because the Ercoupe, as well as other older Standard
certified aircraft, had their Gross Weights established in excess of the
Sport Pilot maximum these aircraft should not be penalized. The reality is
that many of the Sport Aircraft that will be legal under the Sport Pilot
rule would be more than capable of flying very safely at take off weights
well in excess of 1,232 pounds.

The fact is that myself and probably most other pilots holding ratings of
Private Pilot or higher will continue to keep those ratings current and
fly whatever we want, but also I for one want to know that it will still
be possible to fly legally if at some time a medical is denied for
something that does not involve safety when piloting an aircraft.

Hopefully AOPA will give consideration to these thoughts in their response
to the Sport Pilot proposal.

Thanks,

Richard Correll

 Hi Syd,

I may be a little slow but it sure looks like from the table in the
following that at 1,232 gross weight we would meet the stall speed
requirement and the maximum level speed can be controlled to stay within
limits by using a prop that is nearer the climb prop settings. This would
only leave the issue of gross weight and as I previously indicated the FAA
should permit "Sport Pilots" to simply limit the maximum gross weight to
the legal 1,232 just as we limit ourselves to the 1,260 currently. If that
does not make them happy it would be no big deal to get an STC to reduce
the maximum gross weight to 1,232.

In light of the above I would hope that the EOC will take a very positive
and aggressive approach to making this work for all of our members. It may
be just what we need to get more good new people interested in our great
Coupes and the fine people who have them.

Best regards,
Vern

Yes, I know that EAA listed Ercoupes as planes that would qualify. They
made a mistake in doing that.
Here is the latest information from EAA:

Hi Syd,

After much searching, I finally found the reference on the Ercoupe 415C
which lists the original gross weight. It's in Volume 8 of U.S. Civil
Aircraft, compiled by Joseph Juptner. This reference lists the original
specifications for Type Certificate A-718, in three different versions
(original, as amended, and "post-war"). Here are the numbers, in that
order:

Gross Weight: 1125, 1175, 1260

Landing (stall) Speed: 37, 40, 48 mph

Max Level Speed: 110, 110, 117 mph

Original numbers were with Continental A-65-8. Post-war numbers were with
the A-75-12. As I mentioned when we talked the other day, TC A-718 was
amended to include all 415C aircraft at the 1260 gross weight, so as it
stands today these aircraft will not qualify due to gross weight. And as
you mentioned also, the landing (stall) speed is also above the 45 mph
limit.

As Paul Harvey would say, now we know the rest of the story.

See you at Antigo!
