Mitch Sorry to hear about your luck. I happen to be an A&P/ IA that also owns a coupe. (In defense of your mechanic) I have seen, while doing pre purchase inspections, that the seller will change the oil and clean the screen before the inspection. If that is the case your mechanic would have found a clean screen. I have found that sometimes it takes several hours of running before metal starts showing back up in the screen. In response to the cost of having your engine overhauled I find that price way to high. I'm sure that any large shop will charge you that much but there are many fellows that will do it for you for far less. Anyone with a powerplant rating can overhaul your engine for you. Now I am not saying that I would trust all of them but legally they can do it. Ask around at your local EAA group for an a&p in your area that still works on the real airplanes. In the Indy area there are a few guys that will do it for $1000 over parts. Make sure that they send all parts out to be inspected and reconditioned and that you get yellow tags back for all parts. (Some even recommend sending out the case) Trade a plane is a good place to shop for a place to send out your crank, cam etc. In reality the only thing your mechanic is going to do is reassemble all the parts. I strongly recommend staying away from the rich man FBO's and find a small shop or a good A&P that works on the side. Some A&P's may let you remove the engine saving you the cost of labor. In short I think you could get it done for between 5 and 6 grand. I may be all wet and of course these are just my humble opinions.
