Turn and Bank and VSI are crucial instruments for IFR.  Think "Needle,
Ball 
and Airspeed."  Heading indicator and Artificial Horizon are icing on the 
cake.  Unfortunately, all to many pilots learn to rely on the latter two
and 
cant fly to save their butts without them.  Also, if you can't tell which 
side is up chances are the AH won't know either as it will have tumbled.
