----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Coupers; I was able to persuade Univair to fax me a copy of service bulletin 31. I have scanned it into my computer, but it is 7 pages long. So I know if I try to send it to Coupers, it will most likely turned back. However, I will attempt to attach it to this e-mail. At our Coupers Forum today at Sun & Fun, we did discuss this onerous proposed AD. I believe, as do John Wright SR, and Mark Hardin, who both spoke against it, that this AD will only do harm to the Ercoupe/Aircoupe community. If you have the inspection holes cut, not only will it weaken the structure, but unless you use additional inspection techniques, you will not be able to see all of the structure. Specifically, behind the fuel tanks. The best bet, is to remove the wings, and look very thoroughly at the center section structure, both from the wing side and from the cabin side. This will allow you to find any corrosion, if the inspection is done properly. i.e., you must look through the two holes behind the rear spar that the wing light wiring goes through. I recommend that the Coupe community unite, and write as many comments we can against the proposed AD. If your airplane is inspected properly, by removing the wings, every 3 to 5 years, it can be maintained in a safe condition. If this wing removal is combined with an annual inspection, as it should be, it should only add a couple man hours to the inspection time.
I hope that the attachment of Univair's draft service bulletin 31 comes through OK.
