----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Pete: I'm not sure at what point the service bulletins describe removing the vented caps and installing the non vented ones. In my experience, the non vented ones are actually vented through the header tank. There are fuel return lines to both wing tanks on the non vented wing tanks, which are 3/8 inch in size to allow both fuel and air to pass easily between the tanks. There were several changes in the fuel system during 1946, so you could have any one of about 4 systems. I have also found that one must check the size of the vent holes in the various caps. I have been able to solve fuel spillage out of one or more tanks by changing the size of the vent hole. Apparently early tank caps had smaller vent holes than the ones we can currently buy. In fact, I believe the original wire gauge on the header tank was only vented by the size of the hole the wire passed through. The rain proof gauges all have a vent hole that is approximately 1/8 inch in diameter. Are you sufficiently confused now?
