I think the two solutions are pretty well the same...
the cup probably improves damping with regular hydraulic
fluid....the use of gear oil combined with the o-ring
probably makes up in a different way for the innadequacy
of the o-ring seal.

When I jack up the plane and see how things are working
I will decide which route I shall go.
