Darwin, I now remember where you read this informtion..on copies of Ercoupe Service memorandums, page 57, under Ercoupe Model conversions...I scanned and posted on the list. Please note that the paper clearly states that all conversions require the stainless steel installation.. However, I can see where one might, (wishing it were true), read at the botttom of the page under "Modifications" that "The split elevator can be installed on the 415-C model without other modifications to increase the gross weight in accordance with SKYPORT AIRCOUPE SERVICES service letter. " , might mean without the addition of S/S covering. However, I am sure the mentioned service bulletin points out that the S/S covering is required. Again, I apologize for the misleading posting, even tho it is not my creation...simply scanned from the service manual pages for information.
