Pete,

I'd suggest having your mechanic take apart the carb. This can be done
without fairly easily. He then takes it apart and makes sure the vacuum
tubes inside the carb are clean. He also removes the mixture control
plates and cleans them. As I recall, he then strops them by rubbing them
together with an abrasive so they are both very flat and seal well against
each other. After assembly, your Stromberg carb will have a very
controllable mixture control.

It's not that big a deal to do. When mine was done, the billable time was
about 1.5 - 2 hours. I've saved many times that cost in fuel over the
years since.

Thanks Ed, I cannot lean my Stromberg so I am using the gauge strictly for
preventive maintenance and to let me know if a plug breaks down. I really
appreciate your taking the time to respond. Right now every gauge is out
of
my Coupe and I am getting ready to paint the instrument panel and send the
two AH's and altimeter to the shop for calibration. Take care, Pete

Pete,

I did see your message when you posted

it asking for info about the gauges.
I was very busy and couldn't answer then.

I, also, have had lots of trouble with Topica in the last month or two.
Strangely, after I set up Netscape to easily get my mail from my
netscape.com e-mail address and subscribed there, my regular address
started
working find with Topica and hasn't failed me for a couple of weeks.

To answer your question about gauges: I don't have a CHT gauge. I do
have
a sensitive EGT I got from K&S. It's a single probe gauge so I don't get
cylinder diagnostic info.

I've become convinced that Coupes MUST have the sensitive type of gauge.
No
matter how carefully I listen, I can't hear a sharp or big change in the
sound of the engine when leaning. Nevertheless, I get a very distinct
peak
and drop as I lean with my Stromburg carb.

My Stromburg carb responds slowly so, as I lean, I make small movements
and
wait 10-30 seconds to see the results. My K

&S EGT gauge has 25 degree marks
that are about 4 millimeters apart and I can control my EGT to 10 degrees
with accuracy. After adjusting it, I turn the knob to put the needle on
the
special mark so I can easily see deviations as I fly along. The
non-sensitive gauges that show you 500 or 800 degrees in one sweep of the
dial with no adjustment knob are barely worth bothering with IMHO.

As I learned from the book, I lean to 100 degrees rich from peak for max
power and 50 degrees rich from peak for level cruise. At altitude, I
really
can get the fuel burn rates at 100 mph down to the 3.5-4.0 gph the charts
say is possible. From Iowa to Connecticut required only two fuel stops
(and
three on the way back).

Hi Tom, I sure want to thank you for the service, it has been an
invaluable
resource to me. I do tend to think something is amiss from the Topica end
however. The Coupers are really responsive to a lot of issues on the site,
however, when I put out the e mail asking for input regarding the EGT and
CHT units currently in use by Coupers, I did not get a single response.
This
does seem odd, given the responses to many other requests. Either no-one
uses a CHT EGT gauge, or they did not get the message. Just seems a little
odd to me. I finally got what may work because of Lee at Skyport, even
though he does not carry the units, he was able t
