Howdy 'Coupers, I recently received a mailing from PA Consulting on behalf of the FAA regarding a GA survey. The mailng referenced my name, and the tail number of my aircraft, and wanted a bunch of information regarding how much I used the plane, etc. Now, I'm a little on the paranoid side when it comes to privacy. I called PA Consulting and asked them if this was an official request for information from the FAA. They said no, that they only wanted to tabulate the results, and that I was in no way required to participate. So, I asked why the referenced my tail number and they replied that the FAA wouldn't see that, and it was only for convenience. However, I noted that if you choose to respond to the survey on the internet, your tail number is the password to the site. Which means that it would be possible to affiliate your responses to your tail number. Again, PA Consulting assured me that all responses would be kept confidention, and the FAA would not know who responded to what. I politely responded that I would not be completing the survey, and said that I would have been happy to if I did not have this privacy concern. The pleasant young woman from the consultancy asked for my tail number and/or name so that I could be removed from further mailings, and I polited declined to provide that information as well. Now, I'm not encouraging anybody to not do the survey, but you might want to bear in mind who's paying this consultancy. In fact, I hired PA Consulting for over $10 million worth of work for Pfizer last year, and it's been my experience that when I've put heat on them to provide information, I got it. The paying client is the 800 pound gorilla in this scenario. Again, I'm not encouraging or discouraging anything. Just providing some information for your consideration.
