What a great day! First my wife found the "bag" with well over $100 worth
of AN hardware that I had "misplaced" (hmm, it was under the kitchen
counter, go figure) and then I got my engine started after almost 18
months
of being quiet!

Quadruple checked that everything was hooked up as it was supposed to be
and
got my IA's blessing and then brought her outside and tied her to a tree
(don't take that too far!) and chocked her wheels. After two squirts of
primer she started on the second flip (my battery isn't here so I had to
do
it the old fashioned way). She purred like a kitten from the get-go like
she had just been run yesterday. What joy!

No leaks, even the carb doesn't leak like it use to before I got the
proper
float needle and polished it in. The best part is that I can shine a
flashlight into the fuel tanks and see nothing but shiny, clean aluminum
whereas before there was all that nasty brown sloshing compound. She's as
clean as a whistle and should have no fuel problems. What a great
feeling!

Well now a couple more weeks of work and I should be able to get her to
the
airport and back in the air. The hard part is done and now it's a lot of
"small" jobs to get her buttoned up.

The single venturi isn't enough to run both the DG and the attitude
indicator and I never use either so I'm considering taking them out to
save
weight and drag. Of course this will require a new weight and balance but
that isn't a big deal and my IA can take care of it. The only thing that
worries me is that it will leave two, actually three if I take out the
suction gauge too, holes in the panel. I have the simple panel that is
mounted on rubber studs (not the huge late model Alon panel, just the
basic
flat panel that mounts above the control shafts). The question is what do
I
legally use to replace it? I have a CNC router and it's no problem to
make
another panel with all the proper sized holes for just the instruments I
use. I can use the same type of plastic and everything as the old panel.
Is this legal and does it require a 337 or what? My IA isn't sure since
the
panel that is in it now isn't original equipment as far as we can tell but
it is a commercially available panel.
