Pete, With the adjustable EGT I had, I never had any absolute EGT temps to use for comparison. I'd just adjust the mixture to peak the EGT, push back in 50 degrees (cruise) or 100 degrees (max power), then turn the knob so the needle was on the reference mark and fly till it was time to climb or descend. I never had a CHT gauge. When starting to use my mixture, my mechanic took the carb off the plane, cleaned the air-tubes inside, cleaned the compartment and the plates used for the Stromburg mixture control. After putting it back together, we connected the mixture cable and I went flying. At that time I had no EGT and I couldn't hear a clear enough break in the sound or peak in rpms to feel confident in leaning. Once I got the high-accuracy EGT, I found the Stromburg carb leaned very well provided I made changes slowly and gave it time to adjust to my inputs. It really cut my fuel consumption at high altitude and gave some improved power. At high altitude, I got great fuel mileage, just like on the charts. I have a couple of things which I would appreciate input on. My EGT is running at 1400 and the probe is about 3 inches behind the vertical stack of number one cylinder, is this normal, it appears fine by noise. The CHT is around 400 on number one as well. Is your mixture very difficult to move? If not, did you have to do anything to correct it? It is routed almost straight so I know it is not due to a twisted cable, but it is very hard to move. Your input would be appreciated. My new panel seems to be working fine in all other regards as is the rest of the restoration, I now have 5 hours since I did it, had a couple of issues to deal with but no biggies.
