Hmm, you're right, it was a Saratoga not an Archer.  However, the only 
Saratoga I've ever flown in had 2 wing tanks, about 50 gallons each.
Still 
plenty for his short flight.  He was only airborne for about 1:05.  His 
original descent from 5500 to about 2500 was pretty normal, 400-800 fpm
and 
started at a reasonable point to descend for landing at MVY.  At that
point 
(2500') the radar data is consistent with someone having trouble keeping
the 
plane straight and level, and finally entering the death spiral.  As far
as I 
know, there is no evidence to indicate any kind of fuel management
problems.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
