Hi Scott,

You are sure right that the data plate will not save you from a crash.

It may make the insurance company pay if you do crash and if you do not
have the right one the FAA will be pleased to provide you with a violation
or an additional offense if you have an incident, accident or they do a
ramp check on your aircraft.

You may also find it hard to get an IA to sign off the annual with out a
proper Data Plate. Some people use the same guy every year and it is not a
problem but then one year you have to change and find out that the new guy
will not sign until the problem is resolved. It only takes time and money
to resolve it. That is assuming you can prove it is an aircraft and that
it
should have a replacement from the manufacture and the FAA agrees.

Have a good day.

Best regards,
Vern

Hi al,
On my ercoupe, the data plate is a piece of aluminum with the
folloying information stamped on it:
Manufacturer
Model
N number
Serial number
Thats all there is to it. Like another person said before, a data
plate is not going to make an airplane crash.
