----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Caldwell (CDW) happens to be the airport that JFK, Jr. departed from on his last flight. Very popular with the New York metro aviation set, as it's a pretty reasonable alternative to Teterboro, which used to be a reasonable alternative but now is over-populated with bizjets.
CDW is up in North Jersey, under the New York Class B (barely) and in a sea of suburban sprawl lights. Class D airspace. Alas, for those of us who live here, it's easy to see how it occurred. It's hard to discern diddly-squat in the mess of lights...not too different from the LA Basin, or the SF Bay Area, for those of you who've flown there. Looks like the Lance came in on the 45 with the M10 transitioning from crosswind to down-wind. Rough situation at night. Sadly, it sounds like the controllers didn't advise them. I knew the Lance... I'm based a Sky Manor, and its base, Alexandria Field, was formerly my base and is just a couple of miles away. I'm still, obviously, tied to that field. The owner of the Lance was a gentleman and a scholar, a fine pilot by local repute, and he had one HELL of a nice Lance into which he and his partner had poured their heart, soul, and wallets. In all, it looks like one of those stupid, miserable, happenstances that probably just were a question of the odds working against you one day or night, putting two hunks of aluminum in the same spot at the same time. It isn't lost on us that the poor bastard in the M10 had just owned it for a day under four months before he died in it. Wish I'd had a chance to know him before it happened. The reason I am curious is to know about transponder usage. Fairbanks is a TRSA airport because of the resistance to use of transponders, as a result we have had mid airs as well. I am an advocate of transponder use, having lost a dear friend needlessly.Pete -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [email protected] Sent: 11/23/02 3:15 PM Subject: Re: [COUPERS-FLYIN] New Jersey M10 accident ----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- What a shame and almost impossible to see how it could occur.... Here is info on the airplane and owner.
