Couple of notes to the other response:

First, you can use a seal that's not split, but you need to be in a warm 
climate and heat it a lot (in hot water) and be very patient and careful.
If 
you use the split seal (recommended for first time users and cold
climates) 
make sure the split is at 10:30 or 1:30, and not aligned with the case
split 
or below the centerline of the crank.  Use Permatex non-hardening gasket 
cement or equivalent.  Silicon sealer is not approved.  Be sure to put
sealer 
on the split mating surface.  Put the spring on the crank before the seal
ant 
you may find it easier to hook up.  I have never had a problem with the 
spring being too big.  It is not supposed to be tight on the bare crank
due 
to the thickness of the seal.  Be sure the hook for the spring is not
aligned 
with the split in the seal.
