If anyone is interested I have a Garmin GPS 90 (it does have a moving map with an aviation database but no ground mapping) that I am selling for $225. I keep meaning to put it in Coupe Capers. I used it in the Astrocoupe (http:/ercoupe.com) until my wife gave me a GPS Pilot III as a gift. It is very similar to the Garmin GPS 92 (you can see the manual for the 92 at http://www.garmin.com/manuals/206.pdf_ The GPS 92 has a multichannel receiver while the GPS 90 is a multiplexed single channel receiver. It worked fine in N2679H. I see no reason to have a VOR for a VFR airplane when GPS provides so much more information (with no work). Larry, Even my old $99 GPS has a CDI. It takes the line from where I start to the destination and gives me deviation in tenths of a mile. This does everything a VOR will do. I have one in my A2 but I suggest that you consider a good GPS like a garmin 196 as I did . It works much better getting you any place easpecially littly airports and grass strips. then t5he VOR ever did. I haven't used my vor since I got the GPS. Also it most likely not cost you anymore then installing a VOR. Another plus is it will identify all the controled airspace exactly and avoid explaining your presance to a F16 pilot with big guns and a no sense of humor.
