Thanks Luca, that suggestion got me a bit further until I ran into another
build problem with mod_glusterfs.  Since I don't need mod_glusterfs right
now, I've disabled it with --disable-mod_glusterfs to get me over this
little hump.

This suggests that $lt_unset is empty in line 466 of libtool.

I'm certainly willing to accept that this may be a bug in my mandriva
linux installation, but something must have changed since gluster-2.0.0rc8
to introduce this new problem.

Can anyone tell me what needs to be done to work around this problem?

make sure you have up to date autotools and run autoreconf -i

(running libtoolize _may_ be enough btw)
