This is why it came to my mind to do it step-by-step.
Yes, the steps you outlined will work. Just export your existing volume
using GlusterFS.
When you add a new volume for replication, do an 'ls -lR' to trigger
self-heal. Use the defrag
script when you want to use distribute as well.
